Privacy policy

Your data, your rights

Taskza is built for everyday South Africans, and that means treating your personal information with the care you'd expect from someone you trust. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

By using Taskza you confirm that you have read and understood this policy. If you do not agree with how we handle data, please don't use the app.

1. Who we are

Taskza is a South African marketplace that connects clients with local service providers, the handyman down the road, the hairdresser working from home, the tutor saving for varsity. We are the responsible party for your personal information under POPIA.

You can contact our information officer at privacy@taskza.co.za for any privacy-related question, request or complaint.

2. What we collect

We only collect what we genuinely need to make Taskza work. That includes:

Account details — your name, surname, email address, phone number, profile photo and password (which we never see in plain text).
Location information — the home or work address you choose to save, the suburb and city you operate in, and (only if you tap "Near me") your device's approximate GPS location to sort search results by distance.
Provider profile — if you sign up as a provider, the service category, description, prices, gallery images, languages, response time and tags you choose to publish.
Conversations and offers — messages, offers, and offer responses you send through the in-app chat, plus a record of when each message was read.
Reviews and history — reviews you write or receive, and the list of providers and clients you've worked with on the platform.
Device and usage data — basic technical info such as your device type, browser, operating system, app version, and timestamps for actions like sign-in or sending a message. We use this to keep the app secure and to fix bugs.
Verification information — if you choose to verify your account, the documents and selfie you submit. We do not collect ID numbers, banking information or biometric data unless you explicitly provide it for a specific, stated purpose.

3. Why we collect it

To run the service — create your account, show you relevant providers, deliver chat messages, calculate distance, and process offers.
To keep the community safe — detect fraud, abuse and spam, enforce our community standards, and respond to reports from other users.
To communicate with you — send important account emails (sign-in codes, password resets, verification updates) and, only with your consent, optional product updates.
To meet our legal obligations — comply with POPIA, consumer protection law, tax law, and lawful requests from South African authorities.
To improve the app — understand which features are useful, fix things that break, and design new features. Where possible we use aggregated, de-identified data for this.

4. The legal basis we rely on

Performance of a contract with you — most account, chat and matching activity falls under this, because we can't deliver Taskza without it.
Your consent — for things like enabling push notifications, sharing your live GPS location, or signing up for marketing emails. You can withdraw consent at any time in Settings.
Our legitimate interests — running a safe, functional marketplace, preventing fraud, and improving the product, balanced against your right to privacy.
Legal obligation — when we have to keep or share information to comply with South African law.

5. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share only what's necessary to make Taskza work, and only with parties that are bound to protect it.

Other users — your name, profile photo, suburb, and (for providers) your published service profile and reviews are visible to other users so they can decide whether to work with you. Phone numbers and email addresses are not shown publicly.
Service providers we rely on — secure cloud hosting and database services that store your data, an email delivery service for transactional emails, and a maps/places provider that helps autocomplete your address. These providers act as our operators under POPIA and may not use your data for their own purposes.
Law enforcement and regulators — when we are legally required to share information, or when there is a credible threat to someone's safety.
A future business owner — if Taskza is ever acquired or merged, your information may transfer to the new owner, who must continue to honour this policy or notify you of any material change.

6. Where your data is stored

Taskza uses reputable cloud infrastructure. Some of our processors store data outside South Africa, in countries that may have different privacy laws. Where this happens, we make sure the recipient is bound by safeguards that provide a level of protection comparable to POPIA, through contractual terms and recognised international standards.

7. How long we keep it

Active account data is kept while your account exists, so you can keep using the app.
Chat messages and reviews are kept for as long as the related account is active, so both sides have an accurate history of the work done.
When you delete your account, we remove or anonymise your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required by law to retain certain records (for example, financial records or evidence relating to a serious safety report).
Backup copies are rotated out on a regular schedule and are not used for any other purpose.

8. How we protect it

All traffic between your device and Taskza is encrypted in transit using HTTPS.
Sensitive fields, including passwords and authentication tokens, are stored using industry-standard hashing and encryption. Taskza staff cannot read your password.
Database access is restricted using row-level security so users can only read and modify their own data, and the data of conversations they're part of.
Despite our best efforts, no system is 100% secure. If a breach happens that could risk your rights, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as required by POPIA.

9. Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to:

Access the personal information we hold about you.
Correct any information that is inaccurate, outdated or incomplete, most of this you can edit yourself in Settings.
Delete your account and the personal information tied to it, subject to legal retention requirements.
Object to processing for direct marketing, and withdraw any consent you've given us at any time.
Receive a copy of the information you've provided us in a portable, machine-readable format.
Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa if you believe we have mishandled your data.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@taskza.co.za. We aim to respond within 30 days.

10. Cookies and similar technologies

We use a small number of essential cookies and local storage entries to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and cache chat data so the app loads quickly.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies, and we do not sell or share your browsing activity with ad networks.
You can clear cookies and local storage at any time through your browser, although doing so will sign you out and reset some preferences.

11. Children

Taskza is not intended for children under 18. We do not knowingly create accounts for minors. If you believe a child has signed up, please email us at privacy@taskza.co.za and we will remove the account.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the app evolves or the law changes. When we make a material change, we will let you know in the app or by email before it takes effect. The "Last updated" date at the bottom of this page tells you when the current version was published.
